Test marking and 4 sections

The test taker is marked on a range of 1 band to 9 bands in each section. The test is divided into 4 sections · Listening · Reading · Writing · Speaking

Listening

Tests the ability of the test taker to comprehend the English language and understand the spoken language, the section plays 4 audios that may be a conversation between two people, a monologue set in an everyday social context or an academic subject, conversation between four people and so on. The section takes almost 40 minutes to complete of which the audios are played for the first 30 minutes and 10 minutes are given to transfer answers to the listening sheet. Each correct answer rewards 1 mark while there is no negative marking for wrong answers

Types of questions

  1. Multiple choice- a question with 4 options to mark from or sometimes to choose 3 correct answers from about 8-9 options
  2. Matching- matching the most suitable option with the given options.
  3. Diagram labeling- In some questions test takers are required to label a map or a diagram after listening to the audio.
  4. Sentence completion- sometimes blanks have to be filled in a certain word limit that would be stated in the question for example- “Not more than two words”

 

READING

Is the second module of the exam consists of three reading comprehensions each passage contains 14 to 13 questions, that contain questions like multiple choice, identifying information, identifying the writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion and short-answer questions. The section lasts up to 60 minutes and no extra time is given to transfer the answers. Types of questions · Multiple choice questions · Identifying information- contains the true, false questions can also come in form of yes, no questions · Matching headings- headings related to one paragraph of the passage · Summary questions- fill the blanks in two to three words It contains 40 questions and each correct answer carries 1 mark and no negative marking.

General Training Reading

Contains 3 sections Section 1- contains 2-3 short texts English with tasks mainly about retrieving and providing general factual information, for example, notices, advertisements, and timetables. Section 2- comprises two texts around workplace survival. Section 3- one long text general reading. It is also for 60 minutes and no extra time is given to two transfer answers. Carrying 40 questions of 1 mark each with no negative marking. Types of questions same as academic reading.

ACADEMIC WRITING

The third task of the exam is writing, it tests the test takers written grammar and sentence formation along with topic understanding. The marks are given around in both Task 1 and 2 Task response- whether the answer is around the topic or not Coherence and cohesion- the structure of ideas Lexical resource- vocab · Grammatical range and accuracy.

GENERAL WRITING – 60 Minutes

Although Task 2 is the same in both academic and general IELTS there is a difference in Task 1 Task 1- contains a letter requesting information or explaining a situation, it can be either formal or informal, world limit is the same as Task 1 in academic writing and has to be answered within 20 minutes.

 

SPEAKING

It is divided into 3 sections- 1. General questions 2. Cue card 3. Follow-ups General

Questions- It will take around 3 to 4 minutes it will include questions regarding hobbies, hometown, and educational background. Cue card- A topic is given to the test taker and a minute to prepare on it, following which one has to speak on it for 1.5-2 minutes. Follow-ups- The invigilator cross-questions on the cue card for 3-4 minutes General questions and follow-ups have to be answered in 3-4 & 4-5 lines respectively. Students are scored on-
