What is HIPEC surgery?
HIPEC surgery refers to the delivery of aggressive chemotherapy drugs into the abdominal cavity. This procedure is performed to treat cancers that have spread beyond the body of origin. Traditional chemotherapy may be difficult to administer to cancers that have spread to the abdominal lining. HIPEC surgery is an effective method for treating such cancers. It is a two-stage procedure for treating specific kinds of cancer in the abdomen with Hyperthermicintraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). First, the cancerous tissue is surgically removed, and then the remaining cancerous cells are destroyed by applying heated chemotherapy drugs directly onto the abdomen.

What is the procedure for HIPEC surgery?
In HIPEC surgery, two steps are involved:
Cytoreductive Surgery
The initial phase of HIPEC surgery is Cytoreductive surgery. A tiny incision is made in the abdomen by the surgical team while the patient is sedated to view any cancerous tumors or diseased tissue within.
HIPEC Procedure
HIPEC is the second stage of the process. During the procedure, the surgeon removes all visible tumors and cancerous tissue from the abdomen before inserting a chemotherapy catheter. This catheter will administer chemotherapy directly to the abdominal cavity. The catheter plugs into a perfusion machine to heat the chemotherapy drugs and delivers them through the abdominal cavity for approximately 1 to 2 hours. A salt solution will be applied to the abdomen after draining the remaining chemotherapy before the incision is closed.
The duration of the surgery depends on the extent and spread of cancer in the abdomen. If the cancer is advanced, the duration of the operation may be prolonged.
