Security guard company play a crucial role in many places from public facilities to private companies. But do your security guards understand what is expected of them?

Although the exact nature of the duties and responsibilities of security guards vary from place to place, there are a few elements found in most workplaces. By ensuring that your guards fully understand these important attributes of their job, they will be better equipped to create a safe environment for all employees at the facility.

The following duties and responsibilities of security guards are essential in any location:

Visibility

Although it doesn’t sound like a real “must”, making yourself visible is an important part of any security guard’s job. A visible security presence goes a long way in providing peace of mind for your customers. Just having a guard visible can deter break-ins, vandalism, theft, and other problems. In many places, this visibility extends to greeting guests and employees as they enter the establishment.

Patrolling

Of course, it is not enough to have a security guard on site. As such, most security guards are also tasked with conducting patrols to check for anything wrong. Guards should use all of their senses and stay focused throughout their patrol journey, as any given situation can quickly escalate into a serious security concern if not identified and handled properly.

Incident response

A security officer is the first line of defence against workplace incidents, whether they result from human intervention or an environmental threat. Security guards have a responsibility to respond quickly and appropriately to any unusual situation that may come their way. In some cases, this may require calling the fire department or evicting someone from the premises.

However, not all incidents are so dramatic. For many security guards, the incident response may be limited to turning off lights accidentally left on or notifying the customer of a water leak at the scene. Regardless of the severity of the incident, a guard’s ability to assess the situation and take appropriate action to resolve it can significantly change the outcome for the client.

Reports

The security officer’s responsibilities are not over after an incident has been spotted. Even seemingly minor irregularities should be included in a guard’s shift report to help the client understand their business’s issues. For example, suppose a security guard repeatedly finds lights left on in unused rooms after hours. In that case, the customer could use this information to remind employees about conserving electricity. – a measure that could lead to significant savings for public services.

Common issues relating to the quality of the reports are all the more important as it allows the client or the security officer’s supervisor to provide additional instructions if necessary.

Follow installation guidelines

Each client is unique, and as such, the exact nature of security guard duties and responsibilities may vary. In some locations, guards may be required to check employee name tags before allowing anyone to enter the building. In other cases, security guards may be asked to help maintain order at gatherings or events where protesters and other disturbances are concerned.

Regardless of the unique tasks a particular client may request, guards must perform these tasks with the same level of accuracy as their other duties.
