Painting Doors and Window Casings

Choosing paint colors is only part of the process when it comes to making decisions about your DIY painting project. You’ll need to decide when painting doors and window casings and other trim work whether to extend the trim color to all sides of the trim or paint just the face of the trim. Most modern construction is comprised of flat boards for trim which can be handled either way. However, generally wrapping looks best on other types of moldings. Either way you’ll want to start at the outside edge of the trim and keep it wet edge as you paint. Let’s take a look at painting doors and window casings

Painting Doors

Effectively painting doors is very important in your painting project. Door panels are large flat surfaces and doors get noticed. Doors also have functional moving parts so that you will want to avoid buildup of paint which prevents the doors from closing and opening properly.

You should ensure that all doors have been carefully prepared for painting. A good prep job will require a good sanding. You can use a palm sander for the best results . If a palm sander is not available then you can sand the door I hand. Be on the lookout for old drips and runs that may require additional preparation. You can remove old drips and runs using a 60 grit paper and finishing up with eight 120 grit paper for a smooth finish. It goes without saying that for the best results you should prime doors with a good quality primer. If the doors are flat, prime the edges with a brush and then use a roller to prime the faces. You can also use this technique when you apply paint.

If you door has raised panels it should be primed and painted in the following way.

Generally speaking, there aren’t three types of Windows: casement, double hung, and fixed sash. Double hung windows are the most common with a sliding top and bottom. Casement windows open like doors and many are controlled by cranks or other types of rods and handles. Fixed sash windows are those that do not open at all.

One of the most important things you’ll want to accomplish during that window painting process is to avoid getting paint on the window parts. Windows will not work properly when you are sloppy with your paintbrush.

Again proper preparation is a key to a successful and professional looking painting job. Sander scrape any paint buildup from old paint. Paint double hung windows from top to bottom. Begin with the upper sash and work your way down to the lower sash. Casement windows are painted in in generally the same way.

Removing paint from the glass in your windows is easily accomplished with a straight razor blade after you have finished painting. You can also use painter’s tape on your window paints to prevent paint from accumulating. These products work very well and are very inexpensive.

Remember try to get a vision of what you want your windows to look like when you are finished. Once you have established that begin the process of preparation and works towards that goal. Taking the time to prepare will save you time down the road.

Paint your edges first and use a rag to clean off paint that accumulates on the front and back of the door.
Paint the door panels next working from the top down.
You will then want to paint the rails the rails are the horizontal members at the top middle and or bottom on a two or four panel door.
You will finish by painting the stiles. The stiles are the vertical members on both sides of the panels. You will want to make sure that you use long continuous brushstrokes.
