Historically, students have been required to attend classes in person at a university and pay a fee without knowing whether or not they will benefit from the education they receive.

Students can now learn from world-renowned professors at top universities through MOOCs (massive open online courses) for free or a fraction of the cost of attending an in-person class. By taking an online class, students get an idea of what to expect from a course before deciding whether or not to spend thousands of dollars or take time off work to attend it in person.

Students who are unsure whether or not they want to major in computer science can take an introductory course for free on Coursera and decide if they’re going to pursue it further by taking more advanced techniques online or in-person at their university. Students can now learn at their own pace, and they can watch video lectures or read tutorials as many times as they like until they understand what’s being taught. Teachers can now focus on those students who need extra attention without worrying about holding up the class in general.
