Females in the technology sectors of the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States

Research indicates that women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields compared to men.

Nevertheless, there are individuals who are starting to defy the conventional trend and embark on a new career trajectory. Despite these advancements, women currently constitute only a quarter of coding jobs, as reported by SheCodes.

 

United Kingdom

As per the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), the workforce of women employed as programmers and software developers in the UK surged by 15,000 in 2021 compared to the previous year. Additionally, the count of women engaged in web design roles saw a rise of nearly 10,000 during the same period.

A significant skills disparity exists within the technology sector, and based on current projections, it is anticipated that by 2025, there will be just one qualified woman for every 115 tech positions.

Data from the June 2022 ONS labor force survey revealed that among programmers, software development professionals, web design professionals, and data analysts, there were 512,900 men compared to only 113,900 women in these roles, accounting for just 18.17% of the total.

 

Canada

Over the past decade, the proportion of Canadian workers employed in the technology sector has been steadily rising. As of December 2021, the workforce comprised 1.7 million individuals engaged in information and communications technology (ICT) roles across various industries, accounting for approximately 9% of the total Canadian workforce. This trend is projected to continue, driven by the escalating demand for digital competencies in the evolving digital landscape.

However, despite the escalating need for digital expertise, the representation of individuals from marginalized genders in the technology sector remains notably low. This includes transgender and cisgender women, as well as individuals who identify as trans, Two Spirit, gender nonconforming, or nonbinary. For instance, while women constitute 47% of Canada‘s overall workforce, their presence in the tech industry has remained stagnant at less than 30% over the past decade.

Ontario Sunshine List (OSList) is an online database featuring details of public sector employees, including their employers and job titles, who earned annual salaries of $100,000 or more from 2001 to 2022 and beyond in Ontario, a Canadian province.

According to OSList, the representation of gender diversity in Software Developer is 71.43% male and 28.57% female in 2022.

 

The United States

Research indicates that gender representation in the U.S. workforce is almost evenly split between men and women; however, this balance significantly changes when examining tech-related positions. Merely one-quarter of computing roles were occupied by women in 2015, a statistic that has persisted unchanged to the present day.
