Group Exercisers Gain Health Benefits
Are you a lover of going to the gym, on the road, or trails by yourself?
Research suggests that group exercise could have some beneficial results on your well-being.
In a study that was just published researchers investigated whether group exercise could help medical students, a stressed group that may benefit from regular workouts.
Three exercise groups were formed by 69 medical students in order to carry out the research.
A group of participants completed a 30-minute fundamental strengthening and functional training program every week. They also did any additional exercises as required.
The other group was solo exercisers who exercised alone or with two others at least two times per week.
Students in the last group didn't exercise beyond biking or walking to get there.
The researchers measured students' stress levels as well as their quality of life -- physical and physical at the beginning of the study as well as every four weeks.
The students all began their studies at the same levels for these measures of mental health.
After 12 weeks of training, group exercisers saw improvement in all three categories of quality of living, and a decrease in stress levels.
As a result, individuals who exercise had a minimal improvement in their mental quality of their lives -- regardless of exercising for an 1 hour more per week than those who exercised in groups.
The group that was in control did not see any significant change in stress levels or the quality of life at the conclusion of the study.
There are certain limitations to the study, for instance its size being small and the it's inclusion of only medical students.
Students may also pick their exercise group. This can result in different physical or psychological characteristics which could affect the results.
The findings should be considered with care. But, the study suggests that working in teams can be beneficial.
The research was featured in the November issue of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.
Get together to exercise
Other studies have examined the effects of group exercise , specifically exercising in syncin relation to social bonding, pain tolerance, and athletic performance.
Researchers conducted a research study in 2013 published in the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. They recruited participants to perform a 45-minute row.
Following the session, rowers who had rowed in groups -- and synchronized their movements -- had greater tolerance to pain than solo rowers. Pain tolerance increased whether people were rowing with teammates or with strangers.
Researchers think the increased tolerance to pain could result from an increased release of endorphins -- also known as the "feel good" hormones - due to people being in sync with one another while exercising.
This kind of coordinated motion is known as behavioral synchroy. This can also happen during other group activities like play, religious rituals, or dancing.
You may be able to be more successful if you are already close to other members of the group.
In the study published in 2015 studyTrusted Source in PLoS ONE, researchers found that rugby players who coordinated their movement while warming up did better on a following endurance test.
They were already members of a tight-knit rugby club. Researchers think the synchronized movements during the warm-up reinforced the existing social bonds between them.
Researchers suggest that athletes' perceptions of fatigue pain and discomfort might be altered due to this. Participants were able to push harder and perform better.
You might find that you can tap into the power and beauty of synchroy when you are surrounded by cyclists who spin to steady beats or CXWORXing in choreographed dance moves.
